    Internet Security

    There are bad guys out there on the Internet, and you need to protect yourself from them.
    Security for offices and homes is your responsibility.
    Even if you only do Email you must have functioning Anti-Virus software running on your machine.

    Why Bother?

    The bad guys use your computer to send spam emails or they use a group of computers to attack a web site.  Business networks are invaded, their data is encrypted and a fee is required to un-encrypt.

    Malware is a general term for evil software.  There are two main types of bad software:
    Viruses - that control or hijack your computer - called viruses, worms, Trojan horses, etc.
    Spyware - that hide and watch what you do - key loggers, cookies, etc.

 

    Passwords:

  • Take a phrase and use the first letters of each word:
    My Country Tis Of Thee = mctot
  • If required, consistantly use a digit from your birthday:
    mctot9
  • If required, consistantly use a single punctuation symbol:
    mctot9&
  • If required, use an upper case letter:
    Mctot9$
  • Have several standard passwords, one for banking, one for social, one for work, etc.

    Terms you should know:

    Virus, worm, Trojan, bots, botnet, spyware, spam, phishing, pharming, denial of service (DOS) attack, zombie, firewall, spoofed .

    Look them up on Google or Yahoo.

    Hoaxes are also a part of Email and The Web.
    Before you pass on a warning or "free" offer, do a reality check.
    Use Yahoo or Google and search for:
    scam check xxx or free laptop scam or xxx virus hoax.
